The Dolomites are located in the northeastern part of Italy, near the border with Austria. There are several options for getting there. We will address them in the following text and help you choose the best one for your trip to the Dolomites.
Plane
When it comes to flying, there are several airports in the region that you can land on. Venice Marco Polo Airport, Treviso-Sant’Angelo Airport, Verona-Villafranca Airport, and Innsbruck Airport all connect to major European cities like Paris, Frankfurt, and London, making it convenient for travelers from all over Europe to reach the Dolomites.
Bolzano Airport presents another option, but as a regional airport, it only connects to major Italian cities like Milan, Rome, and Florence, making it easy for travelers from within Italy to reach the Dolomites.
You can also reach the Venice Marco Polo and Treviso-Sant’Angelo airports from US cities like New York, Miami, and Chicago. If you cannot find a direct flight, you can always catch a connecting flight at one of the larger European airports.
Train
If you prefer to take the train, there are several options available to you as well. Train connections from Venice, Treviso, Verona, and Innsbruck will take you to towns like Belluno, Calalzo di Cadore, Bolzano, or Trento. These towns all lie on the outskirts of the Dolomites. To reach the central regions of the mountain range, you will have to take a bus.
Bus
You can also skip the trains and access the Dolomites by bus. From outside of the region, buses run between European cities and airports to the larger towns such as Bolzano, Trento, and Belluno, where you can transfer to a local bus line.
However, it is also possible to catch a direct bus to some of the popular towns and valleys in the Dolomites, such as Cortina d’Ampezzo, Val Badia, and Val Gardena. For example, you can take a bus directly to Cortina d’Ampezzo from Venice Marco Polo Airport and Val Badia from Innsbruck Airport.
Once you are in the region, there are several bus routes that connect the different valleys and towns in light of sustainable tourism. Taking the bus allows you to take in the natural beauty of the Dolomites and its charming valleys while reducing your carbon footprint. A few of the options include a bus from Cortina d’Ampezzo to Val Gardena, or from Val Badia to Alpe di Siusi.
Car
If you are traveling by car, you can easily access the Dolomites from Austria via the Brenner Pass and the south via the SS48 and SS52 roads. From the Brenner Pass, you’ll reach the towns of Bressanone and Bolzano, from which you can access the Val Gardena and Val Badia valleys. From the SS48 and SS52, you’ll initially drive through towns like Belluno or Calalzo di Cadore before reaching Cortina d’Ampezzo.
